Serif 2.

Having furthered another idea for the Gent logo i decided my script design for the G wasn't appropriate, it seemed to feminine, i need the design to be bold and geometric as apposed to a single flowing line.

At first this idea didn't look great on the computer but i forgot how much time needed to be spent on vector based imagery, after a lot of re working i am fairly happy with the designs although they do need more time spent on them. I will still continue to develop my other ideas to get the best result but so far this idea is the strongest to me.

Furthering the serif idea i wanted to see if i create a logo where the letter forms flow through creating parts of other letters, it doesn't look great at the minute but seems like a cool idea and i will continue to develop it.

Second book.

Revisited the design of my publication, with the imagery placed purposefully and the type aligned to various images on the page, I also included the years running along the right hand side as a timeline, I am going to carry this aesthetic across to my image publication with a few minor adjustments.
I am feeling a lot more confident about this publication now, for the aesthetic I will be using a simple colour difference for the cover of the books and some form of packaging, at the minute i would like to find a foiled envelope to give the publication a space aesthetic, relating to food packaging you see in space.

Timeline publication.

To represent the date of the events I will position the year along the side and as the audience reads through the publication the text will move up the side of the page, I will go from 1917 to 1993 in the first publication, the second will then take over from 1993 to 2012, when the first is placed below the second it will be a continuing timeline, from the concept being born until the present.

Script 2.

Experimenting with different G's for Gent No. 5 logo,  looking into how i can bring 5 into the logo also. The G5 logo is the strongest but I'm unsure weather to continue with this idea, the serif logo is looking much more masculine and considered, this logo could be mistake for various other professions. I will continue work on the serif and San serif ideas to see which one i prefer.

Various input.

Finally developed a concept for the image layout in my book, each image will be flush to the edge the publication to represent the collated input from various different areas that helped complete the telescope, this also gives the book a nice aesthetic and gives me a chance to align the text and images in an interesting way.

various input

Sans.

Exploring another option for Gent No. 5, this time focusing more on brands such as Toni & Guy with a more up to date aesthetic, i created my own set of letters for a typeface idea where by the cutting away aesthetic is still used but on a Sans serif typeface rather than a Serif, i feel this works really well in creating a masculine look again i still need to explore this idea further to see how far i can push it. These are the designs i have created so far.

The G i designed looks similar to a pair of scissors, while this is a very obvious idea if i spend enough time re working it, it could turn out to be very effective.

Layout.

Experimenting with how to position the type and image throughout my book, at the minute I am just playing around with layout and seeing if any ideas for concepts spring to mind, Din seems like a fitting typeface for this project as it is well structured and great for legibility, this is a main concern due to the amount of information in this publication, having the dates running up the side of the publication could be a nice idea for showing when the events happened.

Serif.

Following another possible option for Gent brief, sticking with the concept of creating an identity that's traditional with a modern aesthetic, i want to take a Serif typeface and manipulate it to create a more modern look, also looking at eliminating parts as to cut away from the type. I like the direction this idea is going it will take a while to get each letter fitting together.

Again i added borders to some of these logo's but feel it takes away the masculinity of the logo, without the border the logo stands alone and represents the traditional male feel.

Script.

Having looked through my logo designs and gathered a range of ideas I'm ready to extend some of them digitally, the first being my script G, i feel this logo has a lot of elegance and builds the bridge between traditional and modern, especially applying a sanserif typeface for the text below, these are the designs i have created so far.

Layout.

Collating images for the second of two publications, I haven't really considered layout, just gathering images for now, i may need to source some higher resolution ones as quality is the most important aspect of this book.

T shirt 2

Further variations of the t shirt designs for loco, i am not happy with the majority of these but at the end of the day we will only be choosing two or three so that's not a problem my favourite ones are the shattered logo versions, they have a much higher impact than the others and maintain the loco aesthetic which is important for the t shirts.

A4

Considering format for the first of two publications, the second will definitely be A4 as it will showcase images captured by the telescope, and show the progression in quality over the past 20 years, the first I wasn't sure about until i began designing these, the reason there are so little variations is because it quite clearly doesn't work, there isn't enough type and the imagery doesn't justify being that large, therefore I will be designing the first A5 and the second A4, this should create a nice aesthetic for the project.

A4

First page.

Considering concepts for the design of the book now, as I stated earlier I would like to keep the design of the book around the timeline of the Telescope, Using type up the right hand margin of the book to show the dates of the chapters, hopefully doing this will keep the reader interested to know what happens next.
I have decided to produce two publications, the first showing a timeline of information from Edwin Hubble discovering how to measure the distance and size of galaxies to the first problem encountered with the telescope in space, the second publication will focus on the telescopes ability to evolve through servicing mission over the past 20 years.

These are a few variations of the first page, not the front cover.

T shirt.

Applying the logo in variations on t shirts for our range, this was just a case of applying ideas we've had in different compositions, we would have explored more designs but we want the t shirts to represent the artwork and the overall brand we've created, I still need apply a lot of Dom's artwork to t shirts but i don't have the files at the minute i will continue with these tomorrow once i have them.

Technical Images.

Just thought I'd do a quick blog post showing all the images I'll be using throughout my first publication, there's some great images found mainly through Wikipedia, NASA's website and Hubble's.

Technical images

Gltich.

Using the pathfinder tool with previous artwork ideas to create these really interesting images, they give off a structured yet chaotic aesthetic which is perfect for the name and the night, this then will require a considered bold logo to counteract the artwork, i think Ross will be really happy with these outcomes, me and Dom will present all of our final artwork ideas to Ross soon and he will pick which ones he will like to use, the night won't go live until the start of summer so we will even have chance to modify and improve any changes he wants from our module deadline until then.

GN / 5 Logo 1

Beginning logo development for my brief, Gent no. 5, the concept behind the logo is to develop an aesthetic that reflects the traditional male Barber shop idea with a modern style to it, i wanted i experimented with both script, serif and San-serif typefaces to see which felt the most appropriate, the script type gives a traditional aesthetic without a modern feel adding a San-serif font underneath could represent the look I'm going for but the serif typeface i have used in other logo is looking quite strong at the minute so i will continue to focus on that idea.

In some of the logo's i have added borders with flares and swirls, although this looks appropriate to the ideas I'm having it comes across a little too traditional and over powers the logo, i want to keep a very sleek minimal aesthetic with this brief.

Friday 19 October 2012

First book.

Just a simple layout in order for me to make sure I get all the information into the publication, there hasn't been much thought put into the design, I will be re-visiting the design once I have developed other briefs further as this one shouldn't take too long, for this publication design I would like to focus on every aspect of the design, after visiting Joe Gilmoore's studio Qubik I will be considering why I place images, type and additional aesthetics in certain places, this means developing concepts for every aspect of my design which I'm quite excited to start.

Firts book

Layout.

Just a few hand rendered designs for ideas of layout through my publication yet, I really just need to source all my images and crack on experimenting with layout, I find hand rendering doesn't give me a good enough idea of how the publication could look. I will play around with layout on the computer and see if I can develop any concepts from there, I'm starting to get quite excited about the end product now, I have been considered stock and binds a lot more with the project this year.

I am definitely going to use the file clip bind as it is relevant the the project and will be easy to bind.

final publication

Glitch 2.

Still developing more ideas for loco artwork, still playing with effects from illustrator like the pathfinder action, the artwork seems to keep getting more and more experimental and glitchey which is perfect for the idea behind the night again we will have to just wait and see what our client wants to use, i want to begin adding type to these artworks to give a better idea of how they might work when finished.

Stretched.

Continuing with artwork ideas, really starting the like the direction these are taking, still focusing on the gridded system idea but stretching the grids to give a different aesthetic and create a more 'loco' feel they still need to be crazier but developing these is interesting and I'm confident about the idea.

Art work.

As Dom will be taking over the finalised logo designs, i felt like playing around with some artwork ideas, using the concept of a grid system representing the brain pattern i decided to create artworks similar to Dom's with slight variations to see what the outcomes were like, i was fairly happy with them but with the project surrounded by 'Madness' i don't feel this artwork represents it, i will continue to develop more ideas and see where it goes.

Dom takes over.

This is the final variation of the logo i will play around with before giving it to Dom, i am quite happy to hand it over now and see where Dom takes it, the logo still needs more character and movement to it to separate it from all the standard logo's you find on generic music flyers, we will use the first logo from this set as we feel it is the strongest.

Wednesday 17 October 2012

Change.

Unfortunately due to me and Dom becoming so involved with Loco and my range for Gent expanding more than I thought it would, I have neglected my space publication, Therefore i will have to let the exhibition side of it go, I have decided to focus a lot more on the design of the book and how i can add features relating to the context of the book, I would like people to appreciate the design of the publication just as much if not more than the content.

Logo.

Me and  Dom sat down to discuss which logo to run with, we decided the warped looking one was most fitting as there was a lot we could still do to it, I think I'm going to leave the logo now and let Dom focus on it. I will begin some artwork ideas to see how far we can take this glitchey gridded concept.

Publication.

Unfortunately I have had to blog these at a much later date than i designed them, with my publication I want to create an aesthetic that involves the reader in what's going on, using simple stocks and binds to create a mission report style to it, I have various ideas through these drawings ranging from inserts to die cuts.

Die cuts within certain different stocks throughout the publication could be really nice to deliver information and represent the idea of looking through something to find information, similar to how the Hubble telescope does.

Mirrored paper in the sections to deliver information could be a nice touch. The text could be printed on one side backwards, then the mirror allows the reader to see the information the right way, I have been thinking about this for a while but seen as though the book is primarily designed to deliver information this could over complicate it and create an obstacle for the audience.

Binding.

Whilst thinking about a mission report I thought using metal file binding clips could be a lovely touch to create the aesthetic I want, a professional considered feel to the book could take it a long way, although the publication is about delivering information, it's just as much about involving the reader and creating a story by involving them.

publication development

Hubble Logo.

I have been experimenting with some logo ideas for Hubble, the concept is based on the four main components to Hubble and their ability to be upgraded, I showed this by using four squares and the circle represents the primary mirror, I'm unsure yet weather to use a logo as none of these appeal to me so far, I'm thinking of having 'The Hubble space telescope' in the typeface Din. I don't feel it necessary to use a logo as the publication will speak for itself.

logo 1

logo 2

Vectored.

Continuing to vector my final variations of the loco ideas, these are feeling stronger than the others, the bold structure of these come with higher impact which is what the logo design needs, i will continue to develop these as they are my favourite so far and combining them could produce some interesting results, once i have finalised the logo me and Dom have decided he will take it off me and experiment so we get the best possible outcome.

Wrpd.

Playing around with the distort effect in illustrator to see what interesting letter forms i can get, it reflects the same kind of typography found in 'Happy Monday's Madchester (rave on)' cover, were trying to bring in a similar audience to the Happy Monday's and the night will have a similar vibe to that era, i feel this aesthetic reflects our client and the night itself, i want to experiment with using this technique on more developed logo's.

wrpd

Bold.

Continuing to sketch up more logo ideas as I'm still not happy with the ones i have so far, i think we're going to leave the warped idea for a more structured logo as the artwork will be pretty crazy and we need a solid logo to give more impact,  have managed to develop a wide range for myself, Dom and our client to choose from and take further.

Out of the box.

Thinking of more ideas for logo's and whilst telling myself to think out of the box i came up with this quite basic but effective idea, simply placing the letters out of the box to create an interesting composition for the logo works well, also developing these are giving me more ideas for other logos, i want to keep the aesthetic as simple as these but with more character as to reflect our client and the night it self.

Vectored warpings 2.

Vectoring logo designs from the preferred scanned images, these ones have turned out much better and i am feeling a lot more confident about the project now, although with my last attempt i only tried a few variations, i decided to try all of these scanned images as i felt one would definitely work.

This version i s my favourite, it seems more structured and considered than the others, the logo is fairly simple which will work with the artwork which is complex and colourful.

Friday 12 October 2012

Vectored warpings.

Taking the warped images from the scanner onto illustrator, i found that the structured more considered image turned out a lot better. The first ones i tried being the individual letters which i seem to all look out of place of one and other, i like the scanned images though and think they could still be used for promotional material.

I also tried applying lines and gradients showing where the creases were in the letter forms but i still didn't like the outcome.

Hubble.

Change in direction, whilst considering which way to take this brief i found creating a publication for a space telescope that hadn't even been put into production let alone taken any images wasn't a very appropriate idea, therefore i will be changing my brief to a publication along side an exhibition celebrating 20 years of the hubble space telescope, as it's been active for over  20 years now and is soon to leave earths orbit, this way i will have much more information to include within the publication both technical aspect and imagery it has obtained.

Warped square.

Trying the warped effect with the logo as a whole apposed to the individual letters as they didn't sit right together, especially when vectored the images didn't look right and were too obscure, these turned out much better and i tried a few less folds and considered where i would fold the image to give the best outcome.

Warped 2.

Continuing my experiments with the warped logo idea, this time using a different structure for the scanned image as the rounded tops of the previous attempt gave a pretty ugly turn out, using a more geometric logo meant that the lines within the logo were always straight and created a much more striking look. I am still not 100% happy with the outcome but i feel i can re work this idea and end up with a really nice aesthetic, i think folding the image as a whole rather than each letter individually will make the logo work together.

Wednesday 10 October 2012

Warped.

Thinking of how i could manipulate the word loco to look a bit more mad and obscure and decided to play around with the scanners around college, i used Din to create a simple block letter logo and began running it through the scanners using folds to create an warped aesthetic, it didn't turn out as well as i'd hoped but if i keep reworking it with maybe less folds and more considered folds, also using a more geometric structure for the letters would give the logo an edgier feel.
